MARIA CHARALAMBOUS
DANCER|CHOREOGRAPHER|PERFORMANCE ARTIST

Maria Charalambous was born in 1999 in Nicosia, Cyprus.
She studied Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Jazz, and Pedagogy at the Iwanson International School of Contemporary Dance in Munich, Germany (2017-2020). She holds a postgraduate diploma titled Performance Research Studies from Sozo Visions in Motion in Kassel, Germany (2020-2021). During her studies at Iwanson, she received a scholarship to participate in seminars with Iñaki Aspillaga from the Ultimavez dance company and Dominique Mercy in a workshop titled Solo en face de Pina Bausch as part of the Tanzwerkstatt Europa festival in Munich.
She taught classical ballet and contemporary dance for two consecutive years (2021-2023) at the “Anoixto Sxolio Dimou Strovolou” (Open School of the Municipality of Strovolos).
She participated in the Performance Lab / Open Up program at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Center (NiMAC), curated by Lia Haraki.
Maria presented her work at Kranhalle, WUK in Vienna, Black Box in Munich, and Egomio Cultural Center in Nicosia as part of the D.A.I.R Residency.
Additionally, she participated in the 59th Venice Biennale in collaboration with Helen Kirwan and Simon Pruciak.
Maria worked as a movement director for the 36th Pancyprian Amateur Theatre Festival with the play The Bacchae at the Aigaia Theatre, which won first place, awarded by the Cyprus Theatre Organization (THOC).
She attended classes at ‘Danceway’ in Athens with Julie Adam and Theresa Brown and completed her teaching practice in Pre-school to Intermediate classes under the mentorship of Mrs. Marianna Vasilatou during the second year of the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS) from the Royal Academy of Dance. She also assisted in the preparation of Danceway’s Gala for its 30th anniversary.
Maria holds a diploma in PBT (Progressive Ballet Technique) and has been a member of Nea Kinisi (New Movement) since 2021.
